Even those who visit Tokyo for just one day, pass through Asakusa, a small neighborhood in the eastern part of the metropolis on the Sumida River, to see Tokyo's oldest temple, Sensoji, and get a taste of the atmosphere of the prewar era.
The first thing visitors do is take a picture in front of Sensoji's first gate (it has two), called Kaminarimon (Thunderbolt Gate) after its giant red paper lantern – the same lantern that the Monchhichi Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate is holding between its hands and feet!
